James Dorsey Ball, Sr. worked for a telephone company as a division traffic superintendent. His father was James N. Ball, and his mother was Mary B. Ball. While he did not attend college, he attended three years of high school. He worked for the Southern Bell Telephone Company in North Carolina before moving to Mississippi on January 1, 1943, to work for the company there.

Lillian Airey Stokes Ball was unemployed, and she attended neither high school nor college. Her father, Edward K. Airey, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1863; he died when Lillian was young. Her mother, Josephine E. Airey, was born in Camden, New Jersey, in September of 1867. Lillian Airey Stokes Ball married James Dorsey Ball, Sr., on June 1, 1911, in Richmond, Virginia. She was relatively active in her community while she lived in North Carolina; she often attended various social functions.

James's sister, Corinne Walker Ball, was born on February 16, 1921. Like her brother, she attended Millsaps College. She was active in the school's organizations and often attended dances. She married James Wagner "Bo" Alexander, Jr., on September 26, 1944. Alexander was born in Jefferson, Georgia, to James Curtis and Zula Waggoner on May 5, 1914. He was a scholar who graduated from the University of Georgia and the University of Virginia. Alexander specialized in the classics, especially Greek history. He had two children with Corinne—James, who had cerebral palsy, in 1945, and Peter in 1946. After their deaths, all members of the family were buried at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Georgia.
